Wondering what is the best time to visit Koh Samet? After moving to Bangkok last year, this small island became one of my favourite beach destinations near the capital city. I’ve visited during February, June and November, and each time the weather was slightly different.
One of the best things about Koh Samet is that it has a distinct microclimate, thanks to which it’s considered one of the driest islands in Thailand. Thanks to its location, it’s also a very popular holiday and weekend place for Thais from Bangkok. So every time I want to book my favourite hotel (of course, I do it last minute) it’s completely booked out, no matter the time of year.
Koh Samet is often considered a good year-round island compared with many other Thai beach destinations, but it still has clear seasonal changes that are worth understanding before you book.
In this guide, I’ll break down the best time to visit Koh Samet by seasons, crowds, prices, and month, so you can choose the best dates for your trip.

Best Time to Visit Koh Samet: My Experience
The first time I visited Koh Samet was in February last year. I spent ten days on the island, and I was actually surprised by the weather, as we had around four days when it rained for half a day. February falls into the dry season, so my expectations were blue skies and sunshine all day long.
The second time I visited was in June. It was only for a long weekend, and during our three days we had lots of sun, plenty of beach time, and only a slightly overcast sky on our last day.
The third time was at the beginning of November, when officially the rainy season is slowly coming to an end. There was heavy rain one evening and overnight, plus one cloudy morning, but otherwise it was sunny.
In general, the dry season runs from December to March, and these are the months when most tourists come, as it’s the most pleasant time for beach weather. You can usually expect more sunshine, lower humidity, and better conditions for swimming, kayaking and snorkelling. But as you can see, there can still be some unexpected rainy days, like during my February visit.

Koh Samet Weather by Season
Koh Samet has three main travel seasons: dry season, hot season, and rainy season. Each one has pros and cons, so the best season depends on whether you care more about sunshine, price, crowds, or flexibility.
Dry Season in Koh Samet: December to March
The dry season is the best time to visit Koh Samet for a classic beach holiday. During these months, you are more likely to get sunny days and comfortable temperatures compared with the hotter months later in the year.
If you are planning a short trip from Bangkok and want to enjoy the sunshine, then I recommend visiting during this season. The only downside is that it’s also the busiest time of year, especially during weekends, Christmas, New Year and Thai public holidays.
As I mentioned above, Koh Samet is very popular with Bangkok residents, so if you can, try visiting from Sunday to Thursday instead of Friday to Sunday.

If you’re visiting Koh Samet during the dry season, book accommodation early, especially if you want to stay in one of the popular areas or at a beachfront hotel.
Hot Season in Koh Samet: April to May
April to May is the hot season in Koh Samet, and in Thailand in general. Temperatures can approach 38°C, and I find it quite challenging to be outside in the middle of the day. But the weather can still be good for beach days if you stay under an umbrella and use a very strong SPF.
Hot season in Koh Samet is great for those who love hot weather and swimming in the warm sea. But if you struggle with heat, you may prefer the dry season, or you can just spend the middle of the day in your room with the AC blasting.
My Tips for Visiting Koh Samet in Hot Season
- Book accommodation with AC.
- Pack at least two, ideally three, swimsuits, as due to the humidity they can take a long time to dry.
Rainy Season in Koh Samet: June to November
The rainy season in Koh Samet runs from June to November. During this period, the weather can be very unpredictable, and strong rain can arrive within minutes, but I have to say, tropical showers have their own charm.
If you are visiting Koh Samet during the rainy season, make sure you pack enough books, board games, or check that your room has a TV with Netflix.
But it doesn’t mean you’ll have rain all the time. It comes and goes, and after a year of living in Thailand, I’ve noticed that it often rains in the evenings and overnight. I still enjoyed a lot of sunshine during my visits in June and November.
Is Koh Samet Worth Visiting in Rainy Season?
If you are okay with some rain, then Koh Samet is definitely worth visiting during the rainy season. Not only will you get cheaper hotel offers, but you’ll also enjoy quieter beaches and fewer international tourists.
Tips for Visiting Koh Samet in Rainy Season
- Book accommodation with flexible cancellation if possible.
- Book your stay close to the main areas like Sai Kaew Beach or Ao Phai Beach, so you still have easy access to shops and restaurants.
- Bring a dry bag, quick-dry clothes, and a light rain jacket. You should also check conditions before planning boat trips or water activities.

Koh Samet in January
January is one of the best months to visit Koh Samet. The weather is usually dry and sunny, making it ideal for beach days and swimming. If you are coming to Thailand for the first time and really want to make the most out of your beach holiday, then come in January and make sure you book your hotel well in advance.
Koh Samet in February
February is another excellent month to visit Koh Samet. It’s still mostly dry and sunny, with the possibility of surprise rain, but it can feel slightly less intense than the Christmas and New Year period. If you want great beach weather without the peak holiday rush, February is one of the best choices.
Koh Samet in March
March is hotter, but still a good month to visit Koh Samet. The sea is inviting, and beach days can be beautiful. My advise is to plan activities in the morning or late afternoon, and spend the hottest part of the day swimming, resting, or somewhere with a fan or AC.
Koh Samet in April
April is very hot in Koh Samet, but it can still be a fun time to visit if you are prepared for the heat. This is also the month of Songkran, Thailand’s New Year festival, so transport and accommodation may be busier around the holiday. If you visit in April, book early and stay somewhere with air conditioning.
Koh Samet in May
May is a transition month, which means that you may still get good weather, but the chance of rain starts to increase. The benefit is that the island often becomes quieter and prices may be lower than in peak season. May can be a good option if you want a more affordable Koh Samet trip and don’t mind some weather uncertainty.
Koh Samet in June
June is part of the rainy season, but it can still give you a mix of sunshine, clouds and quick showers. It’s best to be prepared for everything, so pack accordingly. This is actually a good month if you come to relax and don’t plan to chase after a packed itinerary.
Koh Samet in July
Koh Samet in July is usually a combination of sunny, pleasant days and cloudy skies with rain showers. If you are coming for a short weekend trip, I recommend checking the forecast before booking. Although I’ve learned that weather forecast apps in Thailand are often overly negative, showing rain all the time when it’s actually sunny.
Koh Samet in August
August has a much higher chance of rain, so booking a trip in this month comes with a bigger risk of bad weather. However, it can be nicely peaceful and more affordable. If I were visiting in August, I’d choose a comfortable hotel where I wouldn’t mind spending extra time in case it rains all day.
Koh Samet in September
September is often one of the wetter months, so it’s not usually the best time for a first-time visitor who wants perfect beach weather. But if your priority is budget and fewer people, it may still be worth considering. Keep your plans flexible and avoid relying too heavily on boat trips or outdoor activities every day.
Koh Samet in October
In October, the weather can still be unpredictable, especially earlier in the month, but conditions may start improving as the island slowly moves toward the dry season.
Koh Samet in November
November is a transition month where you get a mix of both rain and sun. This is a great month to come and enjoy good hotel deals and fewer tourists before the main season starts.

December is one of the most popular months to visit Koh Samet. The weather is usually great for beach days, but the island gets busy around Christmas and New Year. If you plan to visit in December, book accommodation months in advance and expect to pay higher prices during the holiday period.

Final Thoughts on the Best Time to Visit Koh Samet
If I was coming to Thailand for the first time and my main priority was sun, swimming and beach time, then I’d come between December and March. I’ve learned the hard way that booking a hotel during this time of year last minute is a huge mistake, so really book it well in advance.
If you don’t mind a bit of rain and purposely want to have fewer tourists around you and also a slightly cheaper hotel, then come in June or November. For me, Koh Samet is a place to escape Bangkok’s madness and pollution, so I’d actually book any time of the year.
