Planning a trip and wondering about the best time to visit Krabi? It matters more than most people think, affecting the weather, prices, and tourist crowds. During my high-season visit, I paid double for my hotel and shared Railay Beach with far more people than I would have in April. I visited Krabi in late February, right in the middle of high season. It was hot, busy, and expensive, but I still had a great time. Knowing what I know now, though, I’d shift my trip to April. Here’s a quick climate overview before the detailed breakdown:

December to February: High Season in Krabi

This is when most tourists visit Krabi, and for good reason. The weather is at its best, with clear skies, low humidity, and calm seas that make island hopping reliable. I would add one note about the humidity, though that is low by Thai standards, my swimsuit still had a hard time drying overnight.

What it’s actually like

Krabi in February is peak season, and it feels intense. It gets hot quickly in the morning. When I visited, we walked about 15 minutes from our hotel to TAN Tribe Café for breakfast at around 8:30 am, and it was already properly hot with strong sun, no clouds, and the kind of heat that makes you glad you put sunscreen on before leaving.

But honestly, it did not affect our plans at all. I totally expected this kind of heat, and when you are spending most of your day on the beaches or in the water, it’s exactly what you want. Starting the day with a good breakfast and getting moving early is the best way to handle it.

The trade-off for this kind of weather is price and availability. This is when Krabi is at its most expensive and most crowded. Hotels were genuinely difficult to find, and my jaw dropped when I saw that decent mid-range accommodation in Ao Nang was around 200 USD per night. A lot of the good places were already fully booked too.

That was partly my fault, because I only booked about a week ahead and in the end, I managed to find a nice place for about 90 USD per night, without breakfast, around a 25-minute walk from the beach. If you are curious, it was called Aspira Escape Hotel. My advice is simple: if you are visiting Krabi in high season, don’t assume you can sort out accommodation last minute.

Railay Beach and the popular island-hopping routes, including the 4 Islands and Hong Island tours, were busy. I noticed the crowds most on Railay and Phra Nang Beach, where it got very packed during the day. But here is the thing: the beach is long, and most people settle right at the beginning without walking any farther. I went all the way to the end and found significantly more space.

March to May: Shoulder and Hot Season in Krabi

March is the tail end of high season, it’s still dry, but the heat starts to build. April and May are transition months and, in my opinion, the best-kept secret for visiting Krabi.

What it’s actually like

April is Thailand’s hottest month, with temperatures regularly hitting 35–37°C and humidity slowly rising. But here’s the thing: you’re going to be on the beach or in the sea, and in my opinion the heat is much more manageable when your day involves swimming, snorkelling, and sitting in the shade with a coconut.

The real advantage of April and May is the price, and this is my biggest recommendation for anyone planning a Krabi trip. The same hotels that cost 200 USD per night in February drop to around 100 USD or less. We’re talking roughly 50% cheaper for the same room.

The weather is still good because it’s pre-monsoon, so you’ll get sunshine most days, with maybe the occasional short afternoon shower. Boat trips still run through most of April and May, and the beaches are noticeably quieter. Restaurants are less crowded, and the longtail boat captains have fewer customers, which can mean better deals on private tours.

June to November: Rainy Season in Krabi

This is Krabi’s monsoon period, so expect rain, sometimes heavy, sometimes lasting for days. But it’s worth knowing that the rainy season doesn’t mean constant downpours, and some travellers actually find it’s the best time to visit.

What it’s actually like

I’ll be upfront, I haven’t experienced Krabi’s rainy season myself, so I’m not going to pretend I know what a random Tuesday in August feels like there. But I have experienced rainy season in Bangkok, Kanchanaburi, and Koh Samet, and it was actually better than you might expect.

The rain typically comes in bursts, a heavy downpour for an hour or two, then sunshine. Some days are completely clear, while others are grey and wet from morning to evening. It rarely rains non-stop, but the unpredictability is the biggest challenge.

➞ One thing worth knowing: Krabi experienced serious flooding last year, in 2025, when roads were submerged and some areas were cut off, so it wasn’t just a bit of rain. This isn’t typical, but it’s a reminder that monsoon season in southern Thailand can be genuinely intense, not just “tropical showers”.

If you’re planning a visit between July and November, keep an eye on the weather forecast in the week before you travel and try to book flexible accommodation or transport where possible. Travel insurance that covers weather disruption is worth the money during this period.

The biggest practical impact of the rainy season is on boat trips, because rough seas can cancel island-hopping tours, sometimes for days at a time. If a 4 Islands tour, Koh Phi Phi, or a trip to Hong Island is the main reason for your visit, rainy season is a gamble.

But it has its upsides. Accommodation prices are at their lowest, beaches are nearly empty, and the landscape is lush and green. Waterfalls are at their most impressive, and if you’re happy to spend a rainy day in a café, chill in your discounted 5-star hotel, or get a massage, and you’re flexible about which days you do which activities then the rainy season can be very enjoyable.

What Does Krabi Actually Cost?

Timing affects your budget more than most people realise, so I’ve put together this realistic breakdown based on actual spending.

Accommodation

➞ For reference: I chose the 5-star Anana Ecological Resort in Krabi and compared its prices across all seasons and across the available booking platforms. The differences are huge, as you can see. I also compared the 4-star Sea Seeker Krabi Resort, which is conveniently located near Ao Nang Beach and has great reviews.

Daily Spending

For food, drinks, and transport, I paid an average of around 1 200 THB (38 USD) per day. That covered three meals, water, drinks, and a return longtail boat to Railay Beach. That’s excluding accommodation and organised tours.

These prices are fairly consistent across seasons, as food prices don’t change much. The biggest savings in the shoulder and rainy seasons come from accommodation and tour prices.

➞ My booking tips: For high season, book your accommodation at least 2 months ahead. For organised island-hopping tours, booking a day or two in advance is usually fine, even in peak season. When I did the 4 Islands tour in February, the sea was actually quite warm and clear throughout the day. At Chicken Island, we went snorkelling and the visibility was amazing, we could see plenty of fish in the water around us. What surprised me most was Koh Thap, where we managed to find our own quiet corner away from the crowds, which felt like a luxury during peak season. Railay Beach

Best months: December to April

The longtail boat from Ao Nang to Railay takes about 15 minutes and costs 200 THB return. The boat runs year-round, but during the rainy season the crossing can be choppy, and boats may stop running during storms or bad weather.

➞ Timing tip: Based on my experience, I highly recommend taking the first longtail boat from Ao Nang, which usually leaves around 8 am. Getting to Railay early means you can have the beach mostly to yourself for a couple of hours before the day-trip crowds arrive. By noon, it was absolutely packed. Also, the last boat back is at 6 pm, so don’t miss it.

Beach Days

Best months: December to March for guaranteed sun, and April to May for heat lovers who want emptier beaches

To be fully transparent, Ao Nang’s main beach isn’t Krabi’s best. It’s more of a departure point than a destination. The real beach experiences are Railay, Phra Nang, Poda Island, and the smaller beaches accessible by longtail boat. All of these are best enjoyed in the dry season, when boat access is more reliable.

Exploring Ao Nang Town

Best months: Any time of year

Cafés, restaurants, and the evening market operate year-round. Rainy season can actually be a great time for the food and café scene, since everything stays open and you’re not competing with crowds for a table.

Is Krabi worth visiting in the rainy season?

It can be, especially if you’re flexible and don’t mind not having sunshine every day or perfect sea conditions for snorkelling. The beaches are quieter, accommodation is cheaper, and you can still get plenty of sunshine between the rain. But if island hopping is your main goal, the risk of cancelled boat trips is very real. It’s also worth remembering that serious flooding hit Krabi last year. Always check the forecast and keep your plans flexible.
