Hua Hin is around 200 kilometers southwest of Bangkok, on the Gulf of Thailand. The best way to get to Hua Hin really depends on how you are arriving in Bangkok and where you are leaving from. If I were landing after a long international flight, I would choose a private transfer, get a Grab, or take the bus from Suvarnabhumi Airport if the timing worked.

Because I live very close to Ekkamai Bus Station, I usually take the minivan. The space is limited, but the journey goes quite fast, and there is usually a stop at a service station where you can stretch your legs and use the bathroom.

One day, I would like to try the train to Hua Hin, but for me it means at least 45 minutes just to get to the train station in Bangkok. The train then takes around 4–4.5 hours, so in terms of time, the minivan works better if you are staying along Sukhumvit, especially around Asok, Phrom Phong, Thong Lo, Ekkamai, Phra Khanong, or On Nut.

When it comes to luggage in the minivan, I really recommend bringing just one piece per person. There is only a small area next to the driver that works as the luggage compartment, and in general, there is not much space.

When I booked my ticket, it said it was advised to purchase another seat for luggage. I didn’t do that and was asked to pay 100 THB at the station, which actually worked out better.

This is the option I would recommend if you want the smoothest journey, especially if you are traveling after a long flight, have too much luggage, or are traveling in a bigger group.

Also, once you arrive in Hua Hin, either at the train station or bus stop, you will still need to get a taxi to your hotel. You can also try to catch a songthaew to save some money, but nobody really knows when they are coming.

Taking the train from Bangkok to Hua Hin is one of the most classic ways to travel. It can be unbelievably affordable, with the cheapest third-class tickets costing very little. However, some trains take around 4.5 hours to get to Hua Hin, and spending that long on a hard wooden bench is really not fun.

The train gives you a more local and scenic experience, but I would only choose this option if you have time on your hands. One of the biggest highlights of taking the train to Hua Hin is arriving at Hua Hin train station, which is one of the town’s most famous landmarks and really pretty.

Most trains depart from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal in the north of Bangkok, right next to Chatuchak Market.

Going back from Hua Hin to Bangkok, there is a tiny minivan station next to Blúport Hua Hin Mall, where you can also purchase tickets from a small ticket window.
