But if you want a peaceful nature escape, a floating hotel, or a romantic riverside stay, then Sai Yok or one of the more remote river resorts may be a better choice.

Where I Stayed in Kanchanaburi: My Experience
When I was choosing our hotel, I already had an itinerary in my mind, so I knew I wanted to stay within walking distance of the Bridge over the River Kwai. There is also a train stop nearby, which takes you up to Krasae Cave and to the final stop, Nam Tok. From there, you can take a songthaew to Erawan Falls, Hellfire Pass, and other nearby locations.
I found Ananzitra Hotel, which was only 3,500 THB (107 USD) for 3 nights, including breakfast and parking. It didn’t have the classic perks like a gym or a pool, but they really weren’t needed for this trip. The rooms were bright, spacious, modern, and comfortable, so I’d definitely recommend this stay. The breakfast was pretty simple, with 4 options to choose from, but it was sufficient enough.
What I liked was that in the morning, I could walk for a few minutes and get to the river, specifically to Tongkan Café, where they have plenty of seats to enjoy the river views. It was also super easy and quick to walk to the famous Bridge over the River Kwai.
I was actually surprised to find out that Kanchanaburi city is quite big and spread out. Luckily, Grab works there just fine, and we were using it to get around. Next time I’ll be visiting Kanchanaburi, I’d be tempted to book a stay at one of the floating resorts by the river, as it looks super special.

Kanchanaburi Town is the most practical area to stay, especially if it’s your first time visiting or you are coming without a car. This is where you will find the main railway station, the war cemetery, the famous Bridge over the River Kwai, temples, the city skywalk, cafes, and some seriously good restaurants.
From here, it’s also easier to arrange tours, as many hotel receptions offer them, or you can book online with GetYourGuide. It’s also easy to get a Grab from here if you want to visit places outside the city.
If I had to be honest, the only downside is that Kanchanaburi Town is just another Thai town and not really a dreamy scenic destination. Therefore, I’d advise you to avoid booking in the very centre of the city. Instead, choose the side of the city closer to the bridge and the river.

$ Ananzitra Hotel – This is the place I booked, and I was very happy with it. The value for money was amazing, and the rate also included breakfast and parking. I visited in June, which is a bit off-season, so it was not crowded. Also, the location of the hotel on a side street made the entire stay very peaceful.

$$ Inchantreedoopool – This was another hotel that caught my attention, maybe because it’s located right next to Ananzitra. The main difference is that it has a rooftop pool with great views, and the entire design is more modern, with a natural style. Overall, it just looks very comfy.

River Kwai Area: Best Area to Stay for Riverside Hotels
Looking back, I kind of wish I had booked our stay by the River Kwai, because it can still be in Kanchanaburi town and close to the train station. My point is that staying by the river always feels a bit more special. Imagine waking up to river views, enjoying breakfast by the water, and relaxing in a quieter setting after a day of sightseeing.
But you have to be careful here because a “River Kwai hotel” can be close to Kanchanaburi Town and the famous bridge, but it can also be farther away along the river without easy access to transport. I recommend checking the map before booking and choosing a more central location, which gives you a nice balance.
If you choose a more remote riverside resort, then treat the hotel as part of the experience. These places are better for relaxing, swimming, reading, enjoying the view, and slowing down, not for going in and out of town all day.

Sai Yok is the area to choose if you want less city and more nature. This national park area is farther away from Kanchanaburi Town, but this is where you will find some of the most atmospheric river resorts, floating hotels, jungle scenery, caves, and peaceful views.
I’d opt for this area if I wanted to take it easy when it comes to exploring. I’d enjoy reading a book on the terrace, using the hotel facilities like kayaking or rafting, and visiting nearby caves and waterfalls without rushing every day between all the tourist spots.
Sai Yok is a great option for those who have already visited Kanchanaburi, or for nature lovers who love a bit of adventure. Just bear in mind that the only dining option might be in your hotel, or you’ll have to jump on your bike to get anywhere. I recommend double-checking what the hotel actually provides.

Erawan Falls is one of the most popular places to visit in Kanchanaburi, so it’s easy to assume that staying nearby is the best idea, but I would not say it’s necessary. You can visit Erawan Falls as a day trip and enjoy the perks of the city for the rest of your stay.
But if you want to do more hiking and explore around Srinagarindra Dam, then staying near Erawan Falls can make sense, especially if you want to beat the crowds and head out early. What you have to take into consideration is that the area is very limited for restaurants and transport, so you need your own car or bike.

Best Area to Stay in Kanchanaburi Without a Car
For me, it was definitely Kanchanaburi Town, but to make it feel less city-like and more nature-focused, I’d say the best area is around the Bridge over the River Kwai. It’s easy for transport and around this area, you’ll also have restaurants, cafés, and anything else you need for your stay.
If you are planning to visit Erawan Falls, Hellfire Pass, or Sai Yok without a car, it’s usually easiest to book a tour, hire a private driver, or check transport options in advance. We took the train to the final train stop, Nam Tok, where we met some songthaew drivers offering us rides to Erawan Falls and other places. However, we didn’t have much time for that, as we wanted to catch the last train back.

Either way, I don’t really think you can go wrong, as Kanchanaburi is one of the most charming places I have visited in Thailand.
