How to Actually Plan a Honeymoon in Thailand: Step by Step

Planning a honeymoon in Thailand doesn’t have to be complicated, and it also doesn’t have to be the most expensive trip of your life, unless you want it to be.

I’ve planned multiple trips across Southeast Asia, both short- and long-term, including several journeys around Thailand, as well as my own wedding abroad. Based on these experiences, I’ve put together a simple, step-by-step approach to help you plan a smooth, romantic, and well-balanced trip without feeling overwhelmed.

Step 1: Decide the Best Time to Go

The first step when planning a honeymoon in Thailand is choosing the right time of year. Thailand is hot year-round, but it also has distinct seasons that you should take into consideration.

High Season: Best Weather

When: December – March

This is the most popular time for tourists visiting Thailand. It’s also known as the dry season, when the weather is generally sunny, warm, and less humid, ideal for beach stays, sightseeing, and outdoor activities. It’s the perfect time if you’re dreaming of that postcard-perfect tropical experience.

However, be prepared for crowds in popular destinations. Accommodation prices are higher, and the most popular resorts often sell out months in advance.

If you visit Bangkok during this period, you might encounter seasonal air pollution, which unfortunately occurs every year, usually from January to March. Some days are fine, while on others you can literally taste the pollution in the air.

Hot Season: Very High Temperatures

When: April – May

April and May are the hottest months in Thailand, with temperatures often reaching close to 40°C (104°F). A few years ago, I was in eastern Thailand swimming in the sea, and the water felt like a hot bath. While the heat can be intense, it also means fewer tourists and better availability at luxury hotels.

Note on travelling to northern Thailand: March and April mark the peak burning season in the north. Cities like Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and their surroundings are often covered in severe air pollution caused by agricultural burning, so better to be avoided.

Rainy Season: Best Value & Lush Landscapes

When: June – November

The rainy season is often misunderstood. It doesn’t usually rain non-stop for months. Most of the time, showers come in the evenings or overnight, with occasional rain during the day. For example, last year we still had plenty of sunshine during the daytime.

I’ve done multiple trips during the rainy season, to Kanchanaburi, Chiang Rai, Hua Hin, and Koh Samet. There were short showers here and there, but the weather didn’t really interrupt our plans, and the rain often felt quite refreshing.

I personally love the rainy season. The air feels fresher, the landscapes are greener, the rain cools things down, there are fewer tourists, and some luxury resorts can be up to 50% cheaper than during the high season.

Note: Some boat transfers may be cancelled due to rougher sea conditions.

So, When Is the Best Time for a Thailand Honeymoon?

➞ It really depends on how you want to spend your honeymoon. Do you imagine relaxing by the sea most of the time with a coconut in your hand? Then the high season is the best choice.

Are you more interested in national parks, cities, and temples? Then the off-season can be a great option. Many couples are pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable Thailand can be outside the peak months and I can confirm that from personal experience.

Step 2: Choose Your Honeymoon Style

Before picking destinations, decide what kind of honeymoon you actually want. One thing I love about a honeymoon in Thailand is that it suits many different travel styles. And if you and your partner can’t agree on just one, it’s very easy to combine several types of experiences in one trip.

Thailand is a perfect destination for relaxing on the beach, diving, learning to cook new dishes, exploring new flavors, going on road trips, hiking in the jungle, and discovering a different culture, history, and way of life.

At the beginning of your planning, ask yourselves a few simple questions:

  • Do we want luxury and relaxation, or adventure and exploration?
  • Are we more excited about beaches, culture, food, or a mix of everything?
  • Do we want a slower pace, or do we want to see as much as possible?

To get the most out of your time in Thailand, I recommend a combination of city + beach, which lets you experience a little bit of everything.

Step 3: Pick the Right Destinations

One of the biggest challenges when planning a honeymoon in Thailand is deciding where to go, especially if you’ve never been before. The country offers an incredible mix of vibrant cities, tropical islands, cultural destinations, and luxury resorts.

Personally, I wouldn’t stay in just one resort in a single location for the whole trip. I highly recommend combining a few places. A great plan is to spend 2–3 days in Bangkok, then head to an island or a national park (depending on your preferences), and add a one or two day trips to nearby islands or points of interest.

Bangkok – Culture, Food & Luxury Experiences

Recommended stay: 2–4 nights

Bangkok is the perfect starting point for a Thailand honeymoon. I wouldn’t spend the entire honeymoon here, but I would definitely plan a few nights in this vibrant city. Most international flights arrive here, and Bangkok offers a surprisingly romantic side, with luxury hotels, rooftop bars, river cruises, world-class dining, and couples’ spa experiences.

From Bangkok, you can easily travel to other parts of the country by plane, train, or bus.

Phuket – Beaches, Resorts & Island Hopping

Recommended stay: 5+ nights

Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and one of the most popular honeymoon destinations in the country. You can get here with a direct flight from Bangkok. It offers beautiful beaches (my favorite was Freedom Beach), luxury resorts, and private pool villas.

From Phuket, you can plan day trips to places like Koh Phi Phi or quieter islands such as Koh Yao Yai or Phang Nga Bay, which are less crowded with tourists.

Phuket also has a wide range of dining options, from casual beach restaurants to fine dining. Just keep in mind that the island is one of the more expensive destinations in Thailand, so booking a luxury resort during high season may come with a higher price tag than expected.

Koh Samui – Relaxed Luxury & Romantic Villas

Recommended stay: 5+ nights

With a direct flight from Bangkok on Bangkok Airways, you’ll land on the island of Koh Samui, known for its luxury resorts, private villas, and stunning beaches. Compared to Phuket, it feels more intimate and relaxed.

From Koh Samui, you can easily take trips to nearby islands like Koh Phangan or Koh Tao, especially if you’d like to explore some of the best diving spots in Thailand.

Note: Koh Samui is not the cheapest destination in Thailand, so if you’re planning your honeymoon on a tight budget, this island might not be the best choice.

Koh Samet – Beautiful Beaches Just 3 Hours from Bangkok

Recommended stay: 5+ nights

Koh Samet is not only my favorite island in Thailand, but also a great honeymoon option if you don’t want to take another flight after arriving in Bangkok. It’s perfect if you’re looking for a small island with pristine beaches, quieter areas, and a very relaxed vibe.

There isn’t a huge list of activities on Koh Samet apart from snorkeling, paddleboarding, and exploring different beaches, but it’s the perfect place to slow down. It’s a true reset spot, with some of the softest white sand I’ve ever seen.

One of its advantages is its location in the inner part of the Gulf of Thailand, which is somewhat sheltered from the strong monsoon systems that affect other parts of the country. I visited in June last year and enjoyed a very sunny beach weekend, even though the weather app predicted clouds the entire time.

Chiang Mai – Culture, Mountains & Slow Travel

Recommended stay: 3+ nights

If you’re not into beaches and would rather explore history, temples, talk to monks, and visit Thai national parks, then consider spending part of your honeymoon in Chiang Mai.

From here, you can visit the city of Chiang Rai, known for its famous White Temple, explore Doi Inthanon National Park, or even drive the Mae Hong Son Loop, a renowned 600+ km scenic route through northern Thailand.

Chiang Mai also offers beautiful resorts, a great coffee culture, and some of the best markets I’ve visited in Thailand, all at more reasonable prices compared to the southern islands.

Step 4: Decide How Long to Stay

I’d say the ideal length for a honeymoon in Thailand is between 10 and 15 days. However, I’ve visited Thailand for just one week before (flying in from Europe), and because I had a well-planned itinerary, it was still a great trip.

Here are my general recommendations:

  • 7 days: Bangkok + one beach destination
  • 10 days: Bangkok + one or two beach destinations (for example, Krabi and Koh Lipe)
  • 14 days: Bangkok + one beach destination with one or two day trips + optional Chiang Mai

Thailand Honeymoon Itinerary Ideas

One of the easiest ways to plan a honeymoon in Thailand is to follow a ready-made itinerary. The country is well connected and easy to travel around. Below you’ll find a few itinerary ideas for your Thailand honeymoon.

7-Day Thailand Honeymoon Itinerary

Coming to Thailand for just 7 days? I’ve done it from Europe, and it worked well but I had everything planned down to the last detail, so it felt like I experienced a lot in a short time.

Thailand honeymoon itinerary: 7-day romantic trip plan

A week in Thailand is ideal for travelers coming from other parts of Asia. If you’re traveling from the USA or Europe, try to spend at least two weeks if possible.

Days 1–2: Bangkok
Start your honeymoon in Bangkok. Recover from jet lag, explore temples, enjoy rooftop bars, book a couples’ spa treatment, and experience a romantic dinner or a sunset river cruise along the Chao Phraya River.

Days 3–7: Beach destination (Phuket, Koh Samui, Krabi, Koh Samet etc.)
Travel from Bangkok to your chosen beach destination. Spend your days relaxing on the beach, enjoying spa treatments, snorkeling, and having romantic dinners by the sea.

10-Day Thailand Honeymoon Itinerary

Days 1–3: Bangkok

Days 4–10: Island or beach destination
Stay in a beachfront resort or private villa and plan one or two day trips to nearby islands.

14-Day Thailand Honeymoon Itinerary

Days 1–3: Bangkok

Days 4–7: Chiang Mai (optional)
Fly north to Chiang Mai for temples, markets, nature, and a slower pace. This is a great cultural addition to a longer honeymoon.

Days 8–14: Beach or island destination

My tip: When planning your Thailand honeymoon itinerary, try not to visit too many places. Moving less means more time to relax, connect, and enjoy being newlyweds. What looks like a 1.5-hour flight often turns into half a day of travel, so ideally pick two, or at most three, destinations. That’s more than enough for an unforgettable honeymoon in Thailand.

Step 5: Book Flights & Plan Your Arrival

Most international flights arrive at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport. Bangkok also has a second airport, Don Mueang, which mainly serves domestic flights as well as routes within the region.

It’s a great idea to spend your first few days in the capital as an acclimatization stop. You’ll have time to recover from jet lag, explore the city, and relax at local spas before flying to your island destination.

I also recommend booking your flights at least two months in advance if you want to get a reasonable price.

Step 6: Book Honeymoon Hotels & Resorts

Choosing the right accommodation for your honeymoon is extremely important, as it will have a huge impact on your overall experience. One thing I love about a honeymoon in Thailand is the excellent value for money, especially when it comes to luxury hotels and resorts.

From my own experience, I can say that for the price of an underwhelming 3-star hotel in London, you can easily stay in a 5-star luxury resort in Thailand.

When booking accommodation for your Thailand honeymoon, focus on two main things: location and reviews. If you’re heading to an island, it’s best to stay at a beachfront resort. For any type of accommodation, look for places that are clean, have great service, tasty breakfasts, and a few extra perks.

To book stays in Thailand, I usually use Booking.com. However, I’ve noticed that Agoda (which is based in Singapore) often offers more properties and sometimes better discounts across Southeast Asia.

Tip: Compare prices on both platforms and book early, especially if you’re traveling during the high season. The best honeymoon resorts in Thailand tend to sell out months in advance.

Step 7: Plan Transfers & Getting Around

Thailand is very well connected, especially when it comes to Bangkok and transport between major cities and islands. There are plenty of domestic flights, buses, and ferries available. However, Grab (the app for booking taxis) is not available everywhere, and in some places you may have to rely on local taxis or tuk-tuks.

The easiest option is to arrange a hotel transfer in advance, as many hotels can organize this for you. Some resorts, especially on islands like Koh Samet, can even arrange private boat transfers from the mainland.

For getting around islands or more remote areas, the best options are renting a scooter or arranging a private local driver for the day. You can simply search online for “private driver in [destination]” or ask your hotel to organize one for you.

Step 8: Pre-Book Romantic Experiences

To make your honeymoon truly special, plan a few key experiences in advance instead of leaving everything to the last minute. Most of these can easily be booked online.

Popular honeymoon experiences in Thailand include:

  • Sunset river cruises and canal boat tours (in Bangkok)
  • Couples’ spa treatments
  • Food tours and cooking classes
  • Private boat trips
  • Rooftop dining experiences

Step 9: Final Planning Checklist Before Arrival

To avoid any hiccups during your honeymoon, here’s a basic checklist and a few recommendations to help everything run as smoothly as possible:

  • Check visa requirements for Thailand
  • Fill in the DTAC form at least three days before your arrival
  • Purchase travel insurance
  • Inform your hotels that you’re on your honeymoon (you might get an upgrade or a small perk)
  • Download useful apps (Grab, Google Maps, translation apps)
  • Prepare some cash (one of the things immigration officers may ask for is proof of funds, usually around 20,000 THB per person). You can carry this in USD, EUR, or GBP and exchange it for Thai baht. A popular exchange with reasonable rates is SuperRich.

Thailand Honeymoon Planning Tips: From someone who lives in Thailand

After living in Thailand for over a year and experiencing the country both as a traveler and a local, I’ve learned that small planning details can make a big difference, especially on a honeymoon. These practical tips will help you avoid common mistakes and enjoy a smoother, more romantic trip.

1. Don’t Overpack Your Itinerary

This is a very common mistake. I understand that for many of you, Thailand is a long flight away and not a place you’ll visit every year, so you want to see as much as possible. But trust me, moving from one place to another every couple of days is exhausting and time-consuming. Ideally, choose two main destinations with a few day trips, and you’ll have a much more relaxed and enjoyable honeymoon.

2. Always Mention You’re on Your Honeymoon

This is a simple but often overlooked tip. Many hotels in Thailand offer complimentary honeymoon perks, such as room upgrades, flower decorations, welcome drinks, or small gifts. Mention it when you book your hotel and again at check-in.

3. Respect Local Culture & Etiquette

Thailand is very welcoming, but it’s also culturally conservative. There are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Dress modestly when visiting temples (cover your knees and shoulders)
  • Avoid public displays of affection
  • Remove your shoes when entering temples and some homes
  • Be polite and patient—friendliness and a smile go a long way

4. Plan for the Heat & Humidity

Thailand can be hot and humid year-round, especially in cities like Bangkok. When I head out, it often takes just ten minutes before I start sweating, so it’s something to be prepared for.

Here are a few tips for handling the heat and humidity:

  • Plan sightseeing early in the morning or late afternoon
  • Wear light, breathable materials like cotton or linen
  • Always carry a hat, sunscreen, and a bottle of water
  • Cool down in malls, public transport, or shops
  • Bring at least two pairs of swimwear—it can take a long time to dry on the islands

5. Download Useful Apps Before Arrival

A few apps can make your stay in Thailand much easier. Here are the ones I use almost daily:

  • Grab: for ride-hailing and food delivery
  • Google Maps: for getting around
  • Google Translate: for communicating with locals who don’t speak English
  • The Skytrains: for public transport in Bangkok

6. Carry Both Cash and Cards

You can pay by card in hotels, many restaurants, malls, and some cafés, but you’ll still need cash for markets, small shops, tips, and local eateries. ATMs are widely available, and the local withdrawal fee is usually 250 THB.

7. Don’t travel to Thailand without travel insurance

Even though the healthcare system in Thailand is excellent, you’ll most likely want a doctor who speaks English and immediate medical attention if something goes wrong. For that, private hospitals are the best option. They often look more like luxury hotels than hospitals but they can also be very expensive. Having travel insurance gives you peace of mind, which is especially valuable on a honeymoon.

➞ My POV: The key to planning a honeymoon in Thailand is balance. Don’t try to see everything, allow time to relax, and choose experiences that feel meaningful to you as a couple.

FAQ: Thailand Honeymoon Planning

Is Thailand a good destination for a honeymoon?

Thailand is a perfect destination for a honeymoon. With so many tropical islands, affordable luxury accommodation, rich culture, and vibrant cities, you’ll often get great value compared to many other honeymoon destinations.

Is Thailand safe for a honeymoon?

Thailand is one of the safest countries I’ve ever visited and lived in. Locals are very welcoming and friendly. There can be occasional pickpocketing in busy places like big markets, but the main thing to watch out for is traffic, especially if you plan to rent a scooter. Make sure you have valid documents, travel insurance, and always wear a helmet.

How long should a honeymoon in Thailand be?

The ideal length for a Thailand honeymoon is 10 to 14 days. This allows you to combine Bangkok with one or two beach destinations without rushing. A shorter trip of 7 days can work if it’s well planned and you’re not flying 10+ hours to get here. I also recommend a slower pace and seeing slightly less, transfers between destinations can be tiring, and you don’t want to feel like you need another holiday afterwards.

Is Thailand expensive for a honeymoon?

One of the best things about Thailand is that it suits a wide range of budgets. You can plan an affordable honeymoon with boutique hotels and local dining, or a luxury honeymoon with five-star resorts, private villas, and fine dining, often for much less than similar experiences in Europe or the Maldives. Follow my website for more details on the cost of a honeymoon in Thailand.

Do we need a visa for a honeymoon in Thailand?

Visa requirements depend on your nationality. Many travelers can enter Thailand visa-free for short stays, while others may need to apply in advance. Always check official Thai government sources before booking flights to make sure you meet current entry requirements.

Can you kiss in public in Thailand?

I wouldn’t recommend it. Thai culture is quite conservative, and public kissing isn’t common among locals. In general, public displays of affection are best avoided out of respect for people around you who may feel uncomfortable.

Can we combine Thailand with another destination for our honeymoon?

Yes, it’s very common to combine Thailand with nearby destinations such as Singapore, Bali, or Vietnam, or pair Bangkok with Thai islands like Phuket, Koh Samui, or Krabi. Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok is a major regional hub, so it’s easy to include Thailand in a multi-destination honeymoon.

Should we book a honeymoon package or plan independently?

Both options can work well, depending on how much time you have and whether you enjoy planning. Honeymoon packages are convenient and stress-free, while planning independently gives you more flexibility and often better value. Thailand is quite easy to plan on your own, especially if you follow a clear step-by-step approach.

Final Thoughts: Planning the Perfect Honeymoon in Thailand

Planning a honeymoon in Thailand might seem overwhelming at first, but with the right approach, it becomes an exciting and rewarding process. Thailand offers everything couples look for in a honeymoon destination, all at excellent value for money. Having lived in Thailand and explored it extensively, I truly believe it’s one of the best honeymoon destinations in the world, especially for couples who want a mix of romance, adventure, great service, and relaxation without constant stress or overspending.
