Where to Stay in Krabi: My Experience
When I was researching places to stay in Krabi, I kept coming across Ao Nang, which seemed to be where most tourists choose to stay. I also had to consider that we were not planning to rent a scooter, so our base needed to be easy to access by Grab. For that reason, Ao Nang immediately felt like the most practical choice.
I ended up booking very last minute, right in the middle of February, which is peak high season and, looking back, probably not the best idea. Many places were already fully booked, and the few decent options left were a bit too expensive. In the end, I managed to find a hotel that was relatively new, located on a side street where it stayed pleasantly quiet at night.
Ao Nang is a highly developed resort town that really has everything you might need: plenty of restaurants (not only Thai food) but also very good cafés, breakfast spots, scooter rentals, a drugstore, hairdressers, travel agencies, and boats available for hire. That convenience is what I appreciated most. And although there are definitely more picturesque places in Krabi than Ao Nang, I still liked being surrounded by those dramatic limestone cliffs that give the whole area its unmistakable character.
The downsides? Ao Nang Beach itself is not the strongest reason to stay here. It’s pleasant in the late afternoon and especially around sunset, but it is not the kind of beach where I would want to spend the whole day. The water was quite cloudy, and much of the beachfront felt more like a parking area for longtail boats. The main streets also became extremely busy in the evenings, which was probably the part I enjoyed the least.
Where to Stay in Krabi: The Best Areas + Hotels I’d Recommend
Ao Nang: the best overall area for most travelers
If you asked me where to stay in Krabi without wanting to think too much about logistics, while still having plenty of good food options nearby, my answer would start with Ao Nang. It is also where most first-time visitors choose to stay, and for good reason.
The main road in Ao Nang is lined with hotels, cafés, restaurants, pharmacies, convenience stores, tour agencies, massage shops, and small bars, and one of its biggest advantages is that you can walk almost everywhere.
Ao Nang is also a great base if you are planning island hopping, as most tours to Phi Phi Islands, Hong Islands, Four Islands, and other day trips leave from Ao Nang or nearby piers. Longtail boats to Railay Beach also depart directly from Ao Nang Beach, which makes day trips very easy.
One thing I would highlight, though, is that Ao Nang Beach itself is not the prettiest beach in Krabi, and the area near the beachfront road can get very busy, especially later in the day.
Which part of Ao Nang is best?
If you stay directly near the beachfront road, you are close to restaurants, shops, and boat departures, but it can also be noisier, especially in the evening.
If you stay slightly uphill or a few streets inland, hotels are often quieter and sometimes offer better value. I stayed about a 20-minute walk from the beach on a side street, and the area was very peaceful. The walk back in the heat could feel a little tiring, but on the positive side, it made reaching my daily goal of 10,000 steps very easy.

Railay Beach: the most memorable and peaceful stay in Krabi
Railay is where Krabi suddenly starts to feel truly special. This part of Krabi is accessible only by boat, and with its dramatic limestone cliffs surrounding the shoreline, it feels secluded and unique. For me, this is the idea of a perfect escape, a place that feels completely removed from the rest of the world.
You can arrive in Railay either via West Railay Beach or East Railay Beach, and during the day many longtail boats bring in visitors from Ao Nang and nearby areas. When I walked through the main street around lunchtime, it was completely packed, but once the day-trippers leave, Railay becomes much quieter and more peaceful.
If you stay in Railay, you can enjoy the main West Railay Beach or walk over to Phra Nang Beach, which I personally liked a lot. During the day, both beaches can get very crowded, so the best option is either to walk all the way to the far end of the beach or come later in the afternoon, especially around sunset, when most people are gone.
There are only a few hotels and resorts in Railay and prices are generally higher than in Ao Nang. Railay West is where most travelers prefer to stay because of the beach and the sunsets. Railay East is less scenic, there is no real beach where you would want to spend much time. In my opinion, the most special place to stay is near Phra Nang Beach, which has just one resort and a few private villas in an exceptional setting.

There are also plenty of food options, from night markets and local restaurants to excellent street food. In my opinion, it is a great choice for travelers who are moving more slowly, keeping an eye on their budget, or simply do not need to stay near the beach.

For years, Tonsai has been especially popular with climbers, as the limestone cliffs surrounding the beach offer some of the most famous climbing routes in southern Thailand. One thing to know in advance is that Tonsai is not the easiest place if comfort is a priority. Depending on the tides and weather, access can feel less straightforward than in Ao Nang or even Railay, and accommodation is generally simpler as well.
Instead of polished beachfront hotels, you will find more basic bungalows and small guesthouses. The nights are quiet, and the whole area feels much less commercial.

Best place to stay in Krabi without a car
As someone who didn’t rent a car or scooter in Krabi, I can confidently say that Ao Nang is the best place to stay without your own transport. There are songthaews running from here to Krabi Town, and you can also book a taxi through Grab to get to the airport, Tiger Cave Temple, or anywhere else you might need to go. Grab is not quite as quick or regular as in Bangkok, and we sometimes had to wait a while, but the cars always arrived in the end.
From Ao Nang, you can also take a boat to Railay or Tonsai, and even walk to Noppharat Thara Beach. Ao Nang itself is also very walkable, which makes it especially convenient if you are not renting a scooter.

Where to avoid staying in Krabi
There is not really a “bad” area to stay in Krabi, but some places may be less suitable depending on your travel style.
- Avoid staying too far inland if you want easy beach access and plan to rely on taxis or Grab, because getting around can quickly become inconvenient.
- Avoid Ao Nang beachfront if you are a light sleeper or do not enjoy busy tourist areas, as the main roads feels very hectic in the evening.
- Avoid Tonsai if comfort and easy access are important to you, because accommodation is simpler and getting there can be less straightforward.
- Avoid Krabi Town if being close to the beach is a priority, since you will need transport every day.
In my opinion, the best way to choose where to stay in Krabi is not to ask which area is best overall, but which one fits the kind of trip you want.

The easiest base for island hopping is Ao Nang or Railay Beach, especially because you can also rent your own private longtail boat from here. That said, many tour companies offer pickups from different areas, so even if you stay somewhere other than Ao Nang, you will not be completely limited.
How many days in Krabi?
I spent 4 days and 3 nights in Krabi, which felt like enough time to see the basics, do the 4 Islands tour, and visit Tiger Cave Temple. Still, if I had more time, I would probably add another boat trip and then return to Phra Nang Beach to spend more time on the beach. If you rent a scooter, you will also have more freedom to explore inland sights. Krabi has a lot to offer, and it is definitely not a place where you get bored quickly.

If I went back to Krabi, I’d probably stay in Ao Nang again, but I’d choose the hotel more carefully. I’d avoid the busiest beachfront streets and book somewhere slightly quieter, ideally with a pool, especially if visiting in the rainy or shoulder season.
Ao Nang isn’t the most beautiful area in Krabi, but it is the easiest and most practical base, especially for island hopping, restaurants, and getting around without too much planning.
If I wanted the trip to feel more romantic or special, I’d choose Railay instead. And if I wanted a quieter beach stay away from the crowds, I’d look at Klong Muang or Tubkaek.
